Remembering Rafaella: Memorial Swimathon
We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all the students and staff who participated in the first Rafaella Costin Memorial Swimathon which took place on Saturday December 28th. Their enthusiasm and commitment played a vital role in making this inaugural event a great success.
The Swimathon, organised by Drogheda Water Polo Club, was held in memory of Rafaella, a cherished student who tragically passed away on December 5, 2021, while playing the sport she loved. Rafaella was a kind and vibrant soul who brought joy and light to everyone around her. Her passion for swimming and water polo perfectly reflected her adventurous spirit and zest for life.
This newly established event is a tribute to Rafaella’s memory and serves as a means to support two meaningful causes: Drogheda Water Polo Club, where Rafaella made lifelong friendships and developed her love for water polo, and Temple Street Children’s Hospital, which provided her with care and comfort during her final moments. The participation of both the students and staff of Loreto Balbriggan, highlights the deep connection she had with her school community. Rafaella’s remarkable contributions during her time at Loreto left a lasting impression. She excelled as a student, shone as a midfield player on the U15 soccer team, and enthusiastically contributed to the school’s newspaper committee, Lorbal News. Her energy, dedication, and infectious enthusiasm will always be remembered. We also keep Rafaella’s family—her parents, Biljana and Eugen, her brother Dino, and her sisters Adriana and Francesca—in our thoughts and prayers.
The funds raised through this event will be equally shared between Drogheda Water Polo Club and Temple Street Children’s Hospital, ensuring that Rafaella’s memory continues to inspire positive change. If you would like to support this meaningful cause, donations can still be made via the fundraising page on iDonate.ie.
