Celebrating BTYSE Success

We are thrilled to continue our great tradition of excellence at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSE). This year, two of our fantastic students, Annabel Hackett and Ella Nicholson, have made us incredibly proud with their innovative and impactful projects.

Annabel Hackett achieved an outstanding result, earning third place in the Junior Individual category of Biological and Ecological Sciences. Her project, “Root Rivalry: Do heritage seeds outgrow their modern competition?” tackles an essential question in agriculture and biodiversity. By comparing the growth patterns of heritage and modern seeds, Annabel’s research highlights the potential benefits of preserving biodiversity in agriculture. Her dedication and insight have earned her this well-deserved recognition.

Ella Nicholson also impressed at the BTYSE, winning the Display Award in the Social and Behavioural Sciences category. Her project, “Do we experience magic the same way? How gender, age, and state of mindfulness can affect our susceptibility to magic tricks and how well people pay attention,” explores fascinating questions about how various factors influence our perception of illusions. Ella’s creative approach and her research captivated the judges, earning her the Display Award.

Both students competed individually, with Annabel representing the Junior category and Ella competing in the Intermediate category. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work, curiosity, and passion for science. We are incredibly proud of Annabel and Ella for their remarkable accomplishments and for representing our school with such distinction at BTYSE.

Congratulations to both students on their outstanding success!

Senior Inter-Loreto Debate Competition

Four of our talented English debaters recently showcased their skills in the first round of the Senior Inter-Loreto Debate Competition, held via Zoom. Impressively, for three of them, this marked their very first experience in debating—but you wouldn’t have guessed it from their confident and persuasive presentations!

The motions debated were as thought-provoking as they were topical, covering issues such as:

  • The implementation of a four-day school week,
  • Holding parents accountable for their children’s actions, and
  • The growing influence of social media influencers.

In preparation for the event, the debaters worked tirelessly on crafting compelling arguments, refining their public speaking skills, and building their confidence. On the day, they engaged in lively discussions and enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly competition with students from other Loreto schools.

Well done to Aishah, Francesca, Eiman, and Holly for representing our school with such enthusiasm and poise.

Inter Loreto 1st Year Soccer Blitz

Our First Year Soccer team had a fantastic opportunity to represent the school at the Inter-Loreto Soccer Blitz held in Mullingar today. The event brought together students from six Loreto schools, creating an exciting and competitive atmosphere filled with skill, teamwork, and school spirit. The students split into two teams of ten and played a series of fast-paced, 10-minute matches against teams from other Loreto schools. Their determination and camaraderie shone through as they gave it their all in every game, demonstrating great sportsmanship and a love for the game.

We extend our sincere thanks to Loreto Mullingar for hosting such a well-organised and enjoyable event. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to compete, make new connections, and represent the school with pride. Well done to all the players involved for their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the day.
