Science Week 2024: A Celebration of Curiosity and Innovation
This week, our school celebrated Science Week, an annual event that highlights our commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education. Over the years, our school has built an excellent reputation in science, with students achieving great success in BT Young Scientist, SciFest and John Hopkins competitions. These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work of our innovative students and the guidance of our dedicated teachers.
The week featured a variety of engaging activities designed to stimulate interest and participation in science. Students across all year groups took part in the Science Week Poster Competition, showcasing their creativity and understanding of scientific concepts. Daily quiz questions during our announcements added an element of challenge, encouraging curiosity and fostering a competitive spirit. In a hands-on activity, Ms. O’Brien’s and Ms. Farrell’s 1st Year classes designed, built, and launched paper rockets. Meanwhile, 6th Year Chemistry students participated in a chemistry-themed escape room, where they worked collaboratively to solve intricate puzzles and unlock combinations, applying their classroom knowledge in a dynamic and interactive setting.
The week also included a field trip to the Demystify Exhibition in Balbriggan, organized by SMART Balbriggan in partnership with Fingal County Council and The Scéal Arts Collection. Ms. O’Keeffe’s 1st Year students began the trip by visiting an Internet of Things (IOT) bathing water quality sensor at the river, where UCD scientists provided insights into its role in environmental monitoring. The next stop was The Warehouse on Vauxhall Street, where students explored further applications of IOT technology and viewed an art exhibition focusing on this theme. At George’s Square, students engaged with the Demystify IOT exhibit, gaining hands-on experience with innovative technologies. The trip concluded with a tour of The Lark Concert Hall, where they viewed a series of exhibitions by various artists, showcasing the intersection of science and art.
Science Week 2024 highlighted the breadth and relevance of scientific inquiry within our school community. Thank you to all the teachers and students who contributed to making the week an informative and enriching experience.
