What to expect
Work experience placement is an integral part of Transition Year. This is a valuable opportunity for the student to experience work in an area in which she might be interested when finished her education. This work placement may be influential in her future career choices. It also offers an excellent chance to observe what skills are being used to get the job done successfully, as well as developing some of those skills herself. In the past, employers have been very helpful and generous with their time, knowledge and expertise.
Transition Year involves three weeks work experience. Students are encouraged to find work experience in areas that are of interest to them as a possible future career. If possible the student should try to acquire three different work placements. It is very important that students start looking for their work experience during the summer holidays and not leave it until September. Work experience takes place during the three weeks prior to the February midterm break.
The dates for work experience this year are:
Monday, 22nd January – Friday, 9th February 2024
Work Experience Google Site
Students create a Work Experience Google Site to record and reflect on their experience of the working world over the three weeks.
Extra Work Experience Programmes
Some organisations offer specific Transition Year Work Experience Programmes outside the school’s dates for work experience. Students are encouraged to apply to participate in these valuable programmes. However, any student participating in one of these programmes must discuss this with the TY Co-ordinator in advance of the placement.
Garda Vetting
If you are considering a work placement with children or vulnerable adults you may be requested by your employer to be Garda Vetted.
Students who are over 16 years of age may be Garda Vetted with parental consent. Please contact the Transition Year Co-ordinator for details.
Any student who is under 16 years of age at the date of work experience cannot be Garda Vetted. This may limit your options for work placement. Please confirm this requirement with the proposed employer.
Please note that Garda Vetting is a lengthy process and may take several weeks/months to be processed.
Insurance Cover Costs
The school provides insurance cover for the student while on work experience.
