Welcome to our website! We are a group of six 4th Year
students doing a year long project on Climate Change and using the
information we learn, we will form a campaign and enter "The One Good
Idea Competition". Our main focus is trees and we created this website
to help spread our message "Cut Back, Not Down" and to provide
information on Climate Change itself and trees.
Our team members are Caroline Brennan, Colleen Kelly, Deirdre
Harford, Eniola Kasim, Jade Bakare and Samantha Burns.
Here is a video that visually interpret what our project was all
about:
The One Good Idea Competition is run annually by the Sustainable
Energy Authority of Ireland. It's aim to the highlight the power that
one person has to help prevent climate change. Students work in teams
of two to six members. Each team researches, designs and
implements an awareness campaign to tackle climate change or promote
energy efficiency to one of the four target audiences: adults and the
wider community, your peers, primary school children or local
businesses.
We decided to base our project on trees, a major cause of Climate
Change. We researched climate, climate change, carbon sink,
deforestation and reforestation, how to plant a tree, native Irish
trees as well as trees and the environment in general to name a few
things. We picked primary school children as our target audience and we
came up with a very creative idea for our campaign.
What is Climate Change? Well, before you can
understand this
concept you need to understand what the word climate
means...
What is
Climate?
Climate is the "average weather" of a place over a
long period
of time (usually 30 years). It includes temperature, rainfall and wind.
By
knowing a place's climate we can guess that summer will quite warm,
about 19°C and that winter will be quite cold, about 3°C. To figure out
the climate for Ireland, weather information is collected from all
around the country every hour and is recorded. By comparing these
records over a long period of time we can figure out what Ireland's
weather is usually like.
This is our tree information page - here you will find
a couple of fascinating facts about trees- the topic of our project.
Read on to amaze your friends with your spectacular tree knowledge!
Did you know?
1) Trees renew
our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing
oxygen.
2)
The amount of oxygen produced by an acre of trees per year equals the
amount consumed by 18 people annually. One tree produces nearly 260
pounds of oxygen each year.
3) One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each
year.
4) Shade trees can make buildings up to 20 degrees cooler in the
summer.
The One Good Idea has finally ended- we must say it
was fun
while it lasted! We spent the whole day in Dubllin castle and
saw many other projects- it obvious that Team Tree To One weren't the
only ones who had workeed hard and made good progress with their projct
this year.
Moving on... The results of the
competition are out
and...
